On Wednesday, Libyan President Muammar Gaddafi in his 100 minute speech to the UN General Assembly yesterday had advocated the idea of Kashmir as an independent state. He had also lambasted United States and the United Nations, and termed the Security Council as the terrorist council.
"Kashmir should be an independent state, not Indian, not Pakistani. We should end this conflict. It should be a buffer state between India and Pakistan," Gaddafi had said.
Chairman of his faction of Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani said that not only the Libyan President but the world leaders particularly the leaders of Islamic nations should play their role in the resolution of Kashmir issue. The world leaders, he said, should stress upon India to grant the people of Kashmir, right to self determination as promised by India in the United Nations.
“We urge the world community to raise Kashmir issue at the ongoing session of UN General Council and stress upon India to grant Kashmir’s right to self determination to decide their fate,” Geelani said.
“India has moral responsibility to fulfill the promise made to the people of Kashmir in the UN Security council through different resolutions,” he added
Praising the Libyan president for his ‘bold’ statement, Chairman, Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF), Muhammad Yasin Malik said that Gaddafi always favored for a lasting and peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue in accordance with the wishes and aspirations of the people. Like Libyan president. Malik said, he expected the world leaders to extent their support to the Kashmir cause and to play their role in the 6 decade old
“Gaddafi has always encouraged our peaceful freedom movement. He had even advocated the need of Independent Kashmir in his articles too,” Malik said.
“India and Pakistan should address genuine concerns of the people of Jammu and Kashmir. Both the countries should respect the sentiments of the Kashmiris and resolve the issue as per their wishes and aspirations,” he added.
The spokesman of moderate faction of the Hurriyat Conference, Syed Salim Geelani said that the statement of Libyan President was a welcome step and the world leaders should also extend their support for an everlasting and peaceful solution to the 62 year old Kashmir issue. He also urged India to adopt realistic approach to resolve the vexed Kashmir issue.
“Pakistan has always extended moral and diplomatic support to the ongoing freedom movement. We urge India to adopt realistic approach so that Kashmir issue is resolved,” Hurriyat Spokesman added.
