The alliance is expected to give a definite response to the prime minister’s recent call for talks on Friday when its chairman, Mirwaiz Umer Farooq, would address a congregation at the Jamia Masjid. “The Hurriyat Conference has already announced to follow a certain track, and despite obstacles, it will continue with the endeavor, for such efforts could bear the desired results,” a spokesman of the amalgam, quoting the Mirwaiz, said in a statement here.
The statement was released after a joint meeting of conglomerate’s executive and general councils chaired by the Mirwaiz.
“The political principle of the Hurriyat Conference is to carry everyone with it despite attempts to create confusion. The Hurriyat Conference strongly stands by its position not to be a victim of confusing politics, and in this regard, a fervent appeal is made to people to exhibit farsightedness at this critical juncture,” the Mirwaiz was quoted as having said.
Today’s meet comes in the backdrop of the failure of the amalgam to build consensus with the Hurriyat faction led by Syed Ali Shah Geelani over dialogue with New Delhi.
Recently a 4-member committee of the Hurriyat (G) comprising of general secretary Ghulam Nabi Sumjhi, advocates Zahid Ali, Muhammad Yusuf Nadeem and Muhammad Shafi Lone met Bilal Ghani Lone and Fazl-ul-Haq Qureshi at the Hurriyat (M) headquarters at Rajbagh here. But the meeting remained fruitless.
More than a week has elapsed since prime minister Dr. Manmohan Singh sought to reach in Kashmir with a fresh offer of talks with “all groups.”
The prime minister on October 28 had invited Kashmiri groups for talks if they had “meaningful ideas for promoting peace and development in Kashmir.”
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq is likely to respond in black and white to the fresh offer by New Delhi tomorrow when he would address a Friday congregation in the historic Jamia Masjid here.
