Led by rights activist Muhammad Ahsan Untoo who heads the groups, the protestors carried placards and banners reading “stop sexual harassment,” “shame on Kashmir police,” and “provide moral support to the victims.”
The protests follow shocking courtroom revelations by nearly 11 school-boys, who had been arrested on charges of stone pelting in downtown Srinagar recently, that they had been forced in sex among themselves while in the custody of the police.
“Post Amarnath agitation, the youth were allegedly sodomized to prevent them from participating in pro-freedom demonstrations. The allegations were not investigated because the police was the main culprit of the abuses,” Untoo said.
“A special investigation team should be formed to probe the allegations and to ensure punishment for the perpetrators of this heinous crime,” he added.
“There are scores of people who have remained silent after being sexually abused. These shameful incidents will continue to haunt the youth who participate in peaceful protests,” Untoo said.
Urging the intervention of the civil society and world human right organizations, Untoo said that the Amnesty International, the Human Rights Watch, the United Nations Commission for Human Rights, the International Red Cross and other humanitarian organizations should take cognizance of the sex abuse of the Kashmiri youth during detention by the police.
