“In our surgical operations across the Jammu province, we have been successful in killing 17 militants, including ten top commanders of the Hizbul-Mujahideen, HUJI and Jaish-e-Muhammad. The HUJI has been totally wiped out while most HM commanders have been neutralized. Our target is now Lashkar-e-Tayyaba,” IGP, Ashok Gupta told a news conference at the police control room today.
Describing the killing of top JeM commander Dawood as the biggest achievement of the police, the city police chief said that the track and target strategy prepared by the police had worked well in eliminating prominent militants.
“As a matter of fact, the track and target strategy prepared for the winters went well. We made a large number of Special Operations Groups (SOG) that carried out strikes against the militants. We knew that the militants would come down in winters,” Gupta said.
The IGP said that six militants were killed in Kishtwar, three each in Rajouri and Doda, two each in Poonch and Reasi and one in Ramban.
He attributed the toll to police sources besides the active support of the civil society. The slain militants, he said, were active in their respective areas for many years and responsible for the killings of policemen and civilians.
Claiming that around 180 militants were active in the Jammu province, the IG said that the militants were running out of weapons due to the loss of their cadre in the last two months.
He said that 20 per cent of the militants were without arms and ammunitions.
“We targeted OGWs be it women or others. We have booked many of them to send our message loud and clear,” Gupta said.
