In an obvious reference to the UJC chief, Syed Salahuddin’s and the Jama’at-e-Islami’s opposition to hartals, the Hurriyat (G) pointedly asserted that its leadership did not live in ivory towers but was in full accord with the masses.
This week’s calendar was issued after the Hurriyat (G)’s apex council, the majlis-e-shura, met at some undisclosed location under acting chairman, Ghulam Nabi Sumjhi, stressing upon Kashmiris to uphold the programme, and resolutely be prepared to offer sacrifices for the movement, besides boycotting payment of taxes and power dues from Wednesday.
The reprieve on Tuesday has been granted in view of the auspicious
occasion of shab-e-baraat, during which people have been asked to hold special prayers for freedom and martyrs. Rural folk have been appealed to use the day to send supplies and relief to the Srinagar city.
Wednesday and Thursday have been kept for large-scale protests and sit-ins, Friday for congregational prayers at main centers to be notified later. People in Srinagar have been asked to offer Friday prayers at Maisuma or to assemble in the area after prayers in their respective localities.
The Hurriyat (G) has granted a break in hartal from 6 p,m. on Friday to 6 p.m. on Saturday for making essential purchases, but people have been asked to hold night protests and rallies.
The total hartal on Sunday is to be marked by “Go India, Go” graffiti on available surfaces.
The Hurriyat (G) asked people to stop paying taxes like VAT, water dues and power fees to the government from Wednesday and hinted that the ambit of the boycott would be expanded in the coming days.
The alliance has asked the authorities concerned to stop tax collection and not to coerce anyone on this account.
“The Hurriyat (G) does not live in bedchambers in communion with soulless spirits in an imaginary world, but is in total contact with the masses, and reaffirms its commitment not to let the immense sacrifices of the people go in vain. This commitment is our asset for the hereafter,” it said.
“Tyranny and suppression here have driven the last nail into the coffin of morality and principles, intellectuals are being silenced by the Public Safety Act, the upright are subjected to all sorts of persecution to stop them from expressing themselves, and there are curbs on the written word. These too are a reason for our agitation and hartal,” it said.
It warned that people would not pardon any individual or organization that acted against the national cause by word or deed.
The Hurriyat (G) declared Syed Ali Shah Geelani as the “leader of the revolution” and said that any harm coming to him would lead to horrific consequences.
