Varsities Asked to Restore Academics Fully

Srinagar, July 28 – With education hit badly by government restrictions like declared and undeclared curfews and separatist-sponsored strikes, Governor N N Vohra on Wednesday convened a meeting of Vice Chancellors and called for taking effective measures to ensure studies are not affected under any circumstances by the prevailing situation in the Valley.
Addressing a high level meeting held at Raj Bhavan which was also attended by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah this evening, the Governor asked the VCs to take all required measures to ensure that there is no gap whatsoever in the envisaged schedules of teaching, examinations, declaration of results, counselling, admissions etc.
The meeting was convened as a sequel to the discussions the Governor and the Chief Minister had last week in which need was felt to discuss required measures for bridging the academic losses which may have arisen on account of the recent developments in the Kashmir Valley.
The Minister for Higher Education, Mr. A. G. Malik, Vice Chancellor, Kashmir University, Dr. Riyaz Punjabi, Vice Chancellor, SKUAST-K, Dr. Tej Partap, Vice Chancellor, Islamic University of Science and Technology, Awantipora, Prof. Siddiq Wahid, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister, Mr. K. A. Ganai, Principal Secretary to the Governor, Mr. R. K. Goyal and Secretary, Higher Education, Ms. Tanveer Jahan, participated in the meeting.
The Governor said that effective measures must be taken to ensure that the educational system is not allowed to be affected under any circumstances and innovative measures implemented to make good the academic losses in the best interest of the students.
The Chief Minister said that the teachers, students, parents and the civil society would need to come forward and ensure that neither the studies of the students nor the healthcare of patients suffer. He said that the career of the students is of paramount importance and it is the responsibility of all of us to see that this does not in any way get affected.
Omar added that every thing possible would be done to facilitate the education of students so that the career and the future of the youth do not suffer in any way.
The Minister for Higher Education, Mr. A. G. Malik put forth some suggestions for bridging the academic losses in the Kashmir Valley.
All the Vice Chancellors of the three Valley-based Universities dwelt on the status in regard to the functioning of their institutions, the strategies adopted to make good the academic losses, completion of examinations, declaration of results and schedules being reoriented for starting the new academic sessions.
