“The incident in Malangpora reportedly involving some Muslim youth is not only deplorable but a brazen attack on the unity of Kashmiris and sinister conspiracy against our movement,” the Hurriyat (M) said.
Several separatist groups, and religious and social organizations have joined the Hurriyat (M) in its appeal for peace, and condemned the incident with the Sikh youth.
In Tral, the victim’s home town, Muslims took out a procession to show solidarity with their Sikh brethren and assured the community their full support and made an appeal to them not to allow a few mischievous elements wreck communal harmony.
The Hurriyat (M)’s top leadership went into action immediately as the Sikhs rose up in protest, and called the community’s leaders for an urgent meeting resolving to defeat the “conspiracies aimed at creating rifts between the Sikhs and the Muslims.”
The Hurriyat (G) echoed the Hurriyat (M) appeal to beware of elements out to wreck communal harmony in Kashmir.
Mainstream parties across the board, too, have condemned the assault on the Sikh youth, and called for an investigation into the incident.
Meanwhile Dal Khalsa a Punjab based political party of the Sikhs in a statement from Amritsar strongly protested against the act of miscreants.
Dal Khalsa leaders today talked with Sikh and Muslim leadership based in Kashmir on phone, the statement said. "Mr Jagmohan Singh a co-ordinator of All Sikh Co-ordination Committee from Srinagar while confirming the sad incident rued that after dilly-dallying and strong protest by the Sikhs of valley that the police has registered FIR against the accused".
Dal Khalsa leaders made an earnest appeal to Muslim religious clerics and pro-freedom Hurriyat leadership Syed Ali Shah Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and JKLF chairman Yasin Malik to press upon their agitating youth to remain in discipline and not to discriminate others on religious grounds as it would give bad name to their struggle for Azadi.
Hoping that the Muslim leadership would do its best to ensure the safety of lives and dignity of Sikhs in future, they said despite the historical hangover, both Sikhs and Muslims of this region have strong cultural bonds and over recent years they have undertaken the process of reconciliation with results beneficial to both the communities.
