Srinagar, Feb 22: Day after counter insurgency personnel from army’s Rashtrya Rifles killed two students in "cold blood," state administration Sunday imposed curfew in entire Sopore town to prevent public protests.
However, despite the announcement of magisterial probe into the incident, protests continued for the second day. Protests spread to Baramulla town and other adjoining areas of the apple rich district.
Thousands of people including men and women took to streets and staged a massive demonstration in Sopore to press for their demand of immediate punishment to the erring troopers involved in what they said was "cold blooded murder" in Bomai locality of the town.
The demonstrators also carried with them the corpse of one the students, Muhammad Amin son of Muhammad Sabir and were demanding that the camp of the 22RR in the area be shifted.
It was on the assurance of the members of district administration including Deputy Commissioner Baseer Khan that the protesters gave in and accepted to lay the student's body to rest.
After the student was buried, hundreds of youth again took to streets and continued with the protests in demand for stern action against the erring troopers.  Later the authorities announced curfew in entire town.
"Curfew has been clamped in Sopore town as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order in view of tense situation in the town as well as its adjoining areas," Deputy Commissioner Baramulla, Baseer Ahmad Khan said.
Khan said that a magisterial enquiry has been initiated and the report would be submitted before the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah soon.
Police has also registered a murder case against the troops under section 302 CrPc in its FIR 73 of 09.
Meanwhile, protest demonstrations were also held in Armpora, New Colony, Chanakhan, Sangrama and Amargarh and Baramulla against the incident.
Reports from Baramulla said that thousands of people poured onto the streets at cement Bridge and clashed with posse of police and CRPF deployed in the area in wake of the tension.
Entire area observed a complete shutdown against the incident, reports added.
On late Saturday evening, troops of 22 Rashtriya Rifles opened indiscriminate fire, allegedly without any provocation, on the pedestrians at Bomai Sopore killing two students, Muhammad Amin Tantray son of Muhammad Sabir and Javaid Ahmad son Muhammad Ismael on the spot while another student, an 8th grader, Firdous Ahmad Khawaja son of Abdul Gaffar was injured in the shootout and is battling for survival at a hospital here.
