SRINAGAR - Chairman for Estimates Committee on Environment, MLA Kulgam and State Secretary CPI (M) MY Tariagami today interacted with the Vice Chancellor Prof Talat Ahmad and members of a core group committee comprising of senior Deans and researchers of KU and sought their expertise in restoring and conserving the ecosystem of Dal Lake.
During the interaction which was held at University of Kashmir Tariagami said that the academic and research institutions like KU can play a great role in the restoration and conservation work of various water bodies by providing timely scientific recommendations and suggestions for the perusal of various legislative committees of the hon’ble house constituted for the purpose and for those in the government.
“Dal Lake is an asset for us and its preservation is our responsibility. Therefore we are in need of expert guidance and viable suggestions and recommendations from higher institutions of learning and research where the researchers and scientists can help us through their useful inputs so as to have an integrated and scientific strategy at our disposal while implementing the restoration and conservation measures on ground to save our water bodies including the Dal Lake,” said MLA Kulgam Tariagami who is also the chairman of estimates committee on environment which has been monitoring the conservation work of Dal Lake now over the last few years.
Apprising Tariagami about various initiatives taken by University for the restoration work of the Lake Prof Talat while presenting a list of recommendations put forth by various scientists and researchers of the varsity said that various departments and research centers of the University are working on various aspects of the Dal Lake ecosystem in order to understand the Lake ecosystem dynamics, ecological-human interactions and other socio-economic driving forces that influence the health of the Dal lake which has tremendous ecological, economic and cultural importance.
Prof Talat informed the legislator that during various deliberations of the core group meeting constituted by the University to recommend measures for the restoration of the Dal Lake, it was felt that the issue is very complex and requires scientific interventions, education and capacity building for the stake holders and development of integrated projects on Dal and surrounding areas.
While furnishing a list of various measures and guidelines conceived by the core group of the University for the restoration and conservation of the Dal lake which can be taken up on priority by LAWDA and other agencies to prevent further eutrophication of the lake Prof Talat said that there measures include Strengthening the development of sewerage and sewage treatment plants including phosphorus removal at sewage treatment plants, all the municipal waste water from the adjoining areas of the Dal lake to be treated and effective public sewerage be ensured in these dal adjoining areas, establishment of reservoirs/wetlands on larger tributaries to retain plant nutrients, elimination of livestock grazing/large breeding farms from the watershed or the assurance of full agricultural utilization of their wastes, dredging of the surface layer of lake sediments in areas of high nutrient accumulation, lake land area reclamation in the interior of the dal, people in the catchment to be provided with proper sanitary facilities and initiating Best management practices (BMPs) in the catchment to minimize and arrest the nutrients and sediments load to the Dal lake.
Tariagami assured the Vice Chancellor that the various suggestions of the experts of the University would be carefully observed and the details of the various proposed projects which can be initiated for the betterment of the lake ecosystem submitted to him by the University would be discussed with all those in the environment committee and higher authorities in the government.
Dean Research Prof Khusheed Andrabi, Registrar KU Prof Zaffar A Reishi, Dean Biological Sciences Prof GM Shah, Head, Dept of Geology Prof Shakeel Romsoo, Head CORD Prof Azra Kamili were also present during the interaction.
