Srinagar: Ten-day jail bharo by Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) continued for the second day today as ten more front leaders and supporters were detained in the civil lines.
With this a total of about 24 front leaders, including its chairman Mohammad Yaseen Malik, have been arrested by police since yesterday.
The JKLF has started jail bharo in the Valley alleging that present coalition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government has curbed the political space of people who are demanding right to self determination.
Raising pro-freedom slogans JKLF leaders and supporters appeared at Amira Kadal near here, marching towards historic Lal Chowk, the nerve centre of the city. However, security forces and state police immediately swung into action and stopped them before they could reach Lal Chowk. Later ten JKLF leaders, including Rafiq Ahmad War and Master Afzal, courted arrest. A JKLF spokesman said about 24 front leaders and others were so far arrested and the ‘jail bharo’ will continue till June 7.
JKLF had announced to start Safr-e- Jehd-e-Musalsal programme from Pulwama in south Kashmir from May 25. However, Malik and some top leaders of the front were taken into custody and later released same night. Later the front announced to start court arrest for ten days in the valley against the alleged choking political space by the government. The front has warned that if they were not provided political space by the government, they will intensify their agitation for which a separate announcement will be made after ten days.
